Artist Statement: | Vandy Leigh Duffy, the child of a social worker and engineer/sculptor, comes from a background infused with the creative spirit. "I grew up with lots of storytelling, music and the making of things." says Duffy. At 8 years old Duffy was using a scroll saw to create jig saw puzzles and sculptures of wood. At 10 she was casting aluminum hearts to give to friends as Valentine's Day gifts. Through High School she pursued silver smithing and could always be found in the art department. Later in life Duffy worked as a social worker and religious educator. During this time she became keenly aware of what each person personally conceals from the world at large. "People are always more than they appear on the surface and things are almost never what they first seem to be." she states. Duffy explores these concepts through her mask making and shadow boxes. "Masks can conceal, disguise or transform, they literally mask you from others. The mask wearer displays one view to the world but keeps the real self hidden. The mask surface is my canvass, it is a fascinating medium to use to explore our place in the world as human beings and what is or seems important." This concept of the hidden is also present in Duffy's shadow boxes where mirrors often reveal items that would otherwise escape the viewer. Vandy Leigh Duffy holds a Masters in Creative Arts and Learning, she is a teaching artist and storyteller and resides in Exeter with her family. | |
