| Betsy Gammons Artist Statement I paint for the love of painting! I have been painting for over 20 years My early work was in watercolor, but in recent years the mediums of pastel and oil have become a passion for me. The intensity of the jewel-like colors of pastel inspire and excite my imagination, and the challenge of palette knife and color- mixing the oils is an area of compelling exploration for me. Inherent in all my work is the goal of portraying the mood and sense of place that captures my imagination. I am also intrigued by the challenge of integrating my love of antique structures with nature’s ever-changing seasons, seascapes, or landscapes. I would acknowledge that traveling to foreign countries, experimentation with new techniques, or even just a certain light upon a scene can inspire my paintings. However, my real motivation to paint is the joy in the process rather than the product – in truth, a deeply felt hunger from within. | ||

| The Pastoral Landscapes of Donald Jurney SAA is privileged to have the artist join us for the October Demo Donald Jurney's painted landscapes offer the viewer a soothing, silent, scenic respite from the burdens of modernity. No signs of technology or urban life mar his pastoral vision. It is a world of old European hamlets, worn wooden gates and fenced fields, red-tiled roofs, turreted barns, poplar groves, stone walls, and rocky shores. It is as if we have been transported to another time and place - and indeed, we have. As Jurney himself commented in his French notebook," I seem to like, particularly, a glimpse of clustered farm buildings, some being used still, some abandoned, set deep in a verdant world." Born in Rye, New York and educated at Columbia University, The Pratt Institute and the Arts Students League. He has lived and painted in the Hudson River Valley, in England and extensively in France. His paintings are represented by Arcadia Gallery in New York, both in SoHo and at their uptown branch at the Four Seasons Hotel. He is represented by Quidley and Company in Boston, and on Nantucket. His work is widely collected internationally, by both private and corporate patrons, and is included in the permanent collections of the Oakland Museum in California, The Museum of the City of New York and the Hudson River Museum in New York. Donald now lives and maintains a studio on the North Shore where he continues to focus on sharing his distinct and inspiring vision of the landscape. More of the artist's work may be seen at www.quidleyandco.com/Artist/Donald_Jurney.aspx | ||
